Almost 4 billion checks were written in France in 2003 - the equivalent of 64 checks per person. In France, checks represent about one in three payments not involving cash, a higher proportion than in any major economy outside of the US. Check use has been declining for more than a decade, however, and continues to fall as card use squeezes checks from the payments system.
