Cash
is in decline in US payments. At the point-of-sale, cash and checks are
increasingly being replaced by debit cards. Credit cards have a steady share
of payments, but have been around for a long time and the market is highly
developed, to the point of saturation. Anyone not already using credit cards is unlikely to cease using checks or cash to switch to them. Debit cards, by contrast, offer less of the stigma of credit cards
in terms of taking on debt and, in practical terms, are more akin to more
immediate payment in the form of checks or cash.
