Traditionally asset managers have not been major investors in information technology, in part due to “soft dollar” arrangements by which sell-side firms provide their asset manager / buy-side clients with much of the information technology needed. Exceptions to this are some of the very largest asset managers which have large IT departments developing proprietary systems to support their extensive businesses.
